Srinigar, Kashmir is a busy, crazy, noisy place. It's an assault on the senses: the traffic (and driving) abominable, the shopping options overwhelming, the hustle ever-present. Nigeen Lake is the absolute opposite: quiet, secluded and serene. From the moment we arrived on deck on our houseboat, transported across the water in a motorised shikara, we knew we were in for a special experience. After a warm welcome from the owner, Maqsood, we were shown through the immaculately appointed living room - thick pile Kashmiri woollen carpet underfoot, intricately carved wooden panelling, paper mache vases and magnificent chandeliers, onto the front deck of the houseboat. As we drank our Kashmiri tea and ate the delicious shortbread-type biscuits, (topped with pistachios), we drank in the tranquillity of the scene: little grebes bobbed up and down in the glass smooth water, moorhens krrruk'ed and clucked and eagles called overhead. Our upstairs suite was the epitome of houseboat luxury. Spacious, airy, luxurious: after three weeks on a budget tour in India, this was the real deal! The softest thick pile carpet underfoot, a large comfortable bed, a sofa and jacuzzi bath, it ticked all the boxes. Watching the sunrise over the water from our secluded upper deck veranda is a memory which will live with me forever. My favourite item on the dinner menu was the fried fish - delicious and a treat after many vegetarian dahls and curries, and the overload of lamb which is inevitable in Kashmir. The breakfast oats/soaked muesli was a real treat too, as were the fresh fruit and masala omlettes. But the biggest treat of all was the Alladin's cave behind the houseboat which stocked an incredible range of Kashmiri handcrafts, including pashminas, stoles and shawls, hand embroidered cushion covers and wall hangings, silk and woollen carpets, and and and. Maqsood's sons, Sami and Aamir were so generous with their time, sharing their knowledge and passion for Kashmiri craft - I could have spent a week there! New Jacquline Heritage Houseboats were undoubtedly the highlight of our time in Kashmir, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Do yourself a favour and spend your first night in Kashmir there: the generous and honest way in which these hosts share their knowledge and experience of Kashmir is invaluable! You can always come back for the last night to tell them about your trip!
